About Historic Downtown Huntsville

Incorporated into the city in 1843, this area was first designated as a historic district in 1974 and had its last addition in 1980. Old Town occupies approximately 100 acres. The dominant architectural styles are Victoria, Bungalow and Colonial Revival, mostly dating from 1880-1929.

Community

Still a thriving upscale neighborhood, Old Town lies adjacent to Twickenham to the northwest, and is west of Five Points. Parking is available in the street and the neighborhood is mostly flat with good sidewalks and shade.

Schools and Education

Huntsville City Schools covers the whole of Historic Downtown Huntsville, and it includes both Huntsville High School and Huntsville Junior High School. Nearby Huntsville schools include Monte Sano Elementary and Blossomwood Elementary.

Recreation and Culture

Downtown Huntsville has a thriving night life, where local businesses are king. Thanks largely to organizations such as the Historic Huntsville Foundation, historic buildings have been preserved and updated to provide both history in form and function here in Huntsville.

Economics and Infrastructure

Designated by the City of Huntsville, Alabama on December 12, 1974 as a Huntsville historic district, it contains houses dating from 1828 onward with the majority dating from 1880 to 1929. Approximate boundaries: East Clinton Avenue north to Walker Avenue; Lincoln Street east to Andrew Jackson Way. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, July 18, 1978.
